Overview

In this project case study, I wanted to solve tho problem of the food-wasting. The goal was to create an app that connects restaurants and stores with consumers looking for affordable end-of-day food options. Restaurants can offer their leftovers at significantly reduced prices through this app.

Throughout the design process, I focused on creating affordable and friendly-looking app that will encourage users to buy secret packages.

Gathering information

To understand user's problems and needs I started to brainstorm who my users will be. I created 2 main personas. To explore them more I also added mind maps.

Design process

Before creating mockups, I made user flow and wireframes. This helped me to focus on the smooth flow and user experience, rather than visual. When I was sure that the process of the reservation was understandable, I started creating visuals.

For the visual design, I wanted app to look nature-inspired, friendly and affordable, and for this I used light colours, rounded font and cure illustrations.

Challenge

The challenge was to create a food sales system without compromising the safety of people with allergies, as the contents of mystery packages are unclear.

Here were my proposed solutions:

  1. Adding allergen tags: Employees would attach allergen tags to each package. I dismissed this option due to the vast number of potential allergens, which would be difficult to include. It would also be challenging for employees to manage, as tags would need to be added to every new package with a random composition.

  2. Eliminating mystery packages: Instead, provide detailed information about the food in each package. However, this solution would offer little benefit since users would likely purchase only preferred items, such as pastries from the bakery, leaving items like loaves of bread unsold.

In the end, I decided to include only a warning on the package page with information for individuals with allergies.
